The seminar introduces to the emergence, variety and interaction of women´s movements in the Americas. After some theoretical considerations about feminist politics and women´s activism in social movements, we discuss the meaning of gender relations in different movements: beginning with suffragist movements and female participation in guerrilla movements, we debate about women´s struggle for human rights and for improving their own living conditions in the poor neighborhoods, getting to issues of reproductive rights and gender violence. In several sessions we try to focus on similar movements in different countries and the interaction of several feminist networks. Debates about Afro-American feminism as well as indigenous feminist thinking will be included in different topics. Readings are in Spanish and English – advanced language skills in English and Spanish are required.
