220067 Interamerican Migration: Central America, Mexico and United States (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Thinking migration in the Americas is usually related to Mexico-US corridor and its dynamics, putting aside other migratory trends that take place between other countries and regions. These other inter-regional movements have their own historical, social and cultural context, creating new platforms and transnational relations.

The aim of this course is to offer students an introductory perspective of Central American, Mexico and United States migratory processes in the last decades. Civil wars, diasporas, violence and natural disasters and other topics are going to be discussed.

The mains themes are:
• Migrations between Guatemala-Mexico
• Migrations between Mexico-USA (Laborsmigration)
• Civil wars and Diasporas in Central America. Migrations to United States. (Refugee and Asylum)
• Civil wars and Diasporas in Central America. Inter Migration
• Migration between Nicaragua Costa Rica
• Migrations between Honduras, Panamá and Mexico
• Young gangs, maras and violence in Mexico and Central America
• Transit/ory Migrations
• Remittances
• Imaginary borders in migrations flows
• Migratory policies in Mexico and Central America
• Unaccompanied minors. Examples of migratory policies and their consequences
