John Stuart Mills kleine Schrift „Der Utilitarismus“ zählt zu den wichtigsten klassischen Texten der Moralphilosophie. Gegenüber dem hedonistischen Handlungsutilitarismus Benthams führt Mill einige Modifikationen ein (qualitative Dimension der Freuden, Regeln als Orientierungshilfen), die den Utilitarismus näher an die Alltagsmoral rücken sollen. Diese gemäßigte Version der utilitaristischen Glücksmaximierung wird von Mill erläutert und gegen verschiedene Einwände verteidigt. Die Schrift ist gut geeignet, um die ethische Theorie des Utilitarismus und ihre Probleme genauer kennen zu lernen. In der Veranstaltung soll der Text gründlich diskutiert werden.
