Der Gegensatz diskret vs. kontinuierlich ist für die Mathematik sehr fruchtbar. Die Analysis geht dabei den Kontinuierlichen nach. Die entscheidende Idee ist bei diesen Untersuchungen immer wieder der sogenannte Grenzübergang. Wir finden ihn schon in den Überlegungen des Archimedes zum Flächeninhalt des Kreises.
Ziel der Vorlesung ist, den Aufbau der Mathematik aus grundlegenden Prinzipien darzustellen. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die beiden Fragen:
- Was ist eine Zahl? (ganz, rational, reell, komplex)
- Was ist eine Funktion? (wild, stetig, differenzierbar)

Die Lehrbuchsammlung hat zahlreiche Titel zur Analysis. Es ist ratsam, mehrere Bücher zu konsultieren.
