230374 Creative Writing (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Contents, comment

In this broad introduction to creative writing, students experiment with various kinds of prose fiction and creative non-fiction, as well as - time permitting - exploring some subgenres of poetry and drama. In addition to providing a forum for committed and hard-working participants to work intensively at their own writing skills, the seminar should interest future teachers alert to the rich potential of creative writing in teaching language and literature. Praxistudien related to this seminar are possible for students in the "old" BA who are not planning to become teachers. Students in the new BA who are not planning to become teachers can fulfil some, but not all, of the “Praxisstudien” requirements in this seminar as well. Praxisstudien projects always have to be discussed and designed on an individual basis in consultation with me.

Requirements for participation, required level

The seminar is open to any student of English who enjoys creative writing, or would like to try it - provided there is enough space in the room. Please note, though, that students in the new BA (2011-2012 onwards) can only get credit for the seminar if it becomes part of Vertiefungsmodul 6. However, this is a course that tends to attract people who participate solely for the pleasure of writing and being with like-minded individuals - and that is what gives the class its soul and energy.

The course requirements are that participants come to class (where the main activity is writing), and participate with passion and enthusiasm, keep a writer’s notebook during the semester, and hand in four “polished pieces” in a three-weekly rhythm the course of the semester. Everyone also takes part in the “poetry picnic” in the last session of the semester where we read, sing or perform extracts from what we’ve written in the course of the semester.
Students who are taking the seminar for VM6 are required to prepare a portfolio of their “polished pieces” to be submitted after the end of the seminar. If students in VM6 wish to do their “Projektarbeit” for 4 LPs in this seminar, they should approach me to discuss a project.
