230349 Getting the Picture: Graphic Novels (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Picture Book? Comic? Popular Entertainment? Art? Literature?
What is a graphic novel and what are adequate ways of analyzing it?
Increasingly popular, graphic novels have also found their way into literary studies research and scholarship, not least due to their fascinating blend of verbal and visual imagery. Numerous literary classics have been re-imagined in graphic novel format, a fresh take on intertextuality.
In this class, we will ponder and explore possible definitions of this narrative medium and try out analytical approaches that take the lexical and graphical components into consideration. For this, we will look into narrative theories and cultural histories of the comic book, before we turn to close-reading analyses of chosen graphic novels.
