Die Ironie ist einerseits eine besonders wichtige rhetorische Figur, andererseits aber auch – seit der Romantik – ein poetisches Produktionsprinzip permanenter Reflexivität. Dann scheint die Ironie dem Humor sehr nahe (Jean Paul). Als ‚ironisch‘ wird zudem eine grundsätzliche, womöglich sogar existenziell aufgeladene Haltung der Relativierung, der Skepsis verstanden; oft bezieht man sich dabei auf die sog. sokratische Ironie.
Das Seminar, das auf ausdrücklichen Wunsch der Studierenden angeboten wird, will versuchen, die verschiedenen Ironie-Begriffe (philosophisch, rhetorisch, linguistisch, poetologisch) genauer zu bestimmen. Besprochen werden Texte der Antike (Plato, Quintilian, Cicero), der Frühen Neuzeit (Shakespeare), der Romantik (Fr. Schlegel), des 20. Jahrhunderts (Kafka, Thomas Mann, Martin Walser). Zum Schluss des Seminars wollen wir diskutieren, ob die simulative, inszenatorische Pop- und Postmoderne als ironische Epoche beschrieben werden kann
