261065 Science and Value (S) (SoSe 2015)

Contents, comment

This course will examine the appropriate role of value judgments in science. We will evaluate the thesis of value neutrality, according to which ethical, social, and other ‘non-epistemic’ value judgments can and should be excluded from the domain of hypothesis appraisal. In this part of the course, we will pay particular attention to the so-called ‘argument from inductive risk.’ Following this, we will discuss some of the potential implications of denying the thesis of value neutrality. Time permitting, we will conclude the course with a discussion of the role and effects of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in science and the types of values that an emphasis on IPRs reflects.
