281120 Atomic and Molecular Physics I (V) (WiSe 2025/2026)

This course is taught in English if requested, i.e., if students participate that are not speaking German.

Note: The first lecture in this course will be held on Tuesday October 14, 10:15 am in the lecture hall H11!

The topics covered are: Brief introduction to quantum mechanics (wave mechanics, angular momentum), the H atom, the photon, light matter interaction, a first introduction to quantum optics, the He atom, many electron atoms and the periodic table, simple molecules and molecular excitations, spectroscopy methods.

The lecturing and turorials will be organized as normal classroom teaching. Adminstration of the course will be organized via Moodle.

Requirements for participation, required level

Basic knowledge from the Introductory Courses in Physics and a theory course in Quantum Mechanics are helpful but not mandatorily required.

Allocation of the full number of ECTS points (10) requires active participation and passing an oral exam (30-40 min) after the lecturing period. Active participation means: Preparation of at least 50% of the homework assignments for presentation in the tutorial groups, presentation of at least two solution in the tutorial.
