In this course, we will examine the use of video games for and in ELT from various perspectives. We will view video games as complex systems, texts, and practices in a broader sociocultural context. After approaching a definition of video games for our seminar and discussing some technical/theoretical considerations, we will explore different approaches of using video games in the English classroom. While keeping in mind curricular policy frameworks, our approach to exploring the potential of video games for ELT will particularly be based on new understandings of literacy. With our theoretical framework in mind, we will further collect and reflect on using specific video games for our own (future) teaching. This also entails critically evaluating the use of (specific) video games for our classrooms.
Everyone is welcome in this class - even if you do not consider yourself a "gamer".
