Durch die Lektüre von Artikeln über Methoden und anhand authentischer Beispiele aus der aktuellen Forschung lernen die Studierenden qualitative Methoden der empirischen Linguistik kennen. Dazu gehören z.B. die Gesprächsanalyse, die Diskursanalyse und Methoden der Text-, Medien- und Soziolinguistik.
Durch die Entwicklung eigener Forschungsprojekte lernen die Studierenden, die Voraussetzungen, Fragestellungen, Vorgehensweisen und Ergebnisse der verschiedenen Methoden und ihre Rolle in der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschung im Allgemeinen einzuschätzen.By reading papers on methods and using authentic examples from current research, the students learn qualitative methods of empirical linguistics. These include, for example, conversation analysis, discourse analysis and methods of text-, media- and sociolinguistics.
By developing their own research projects, students learn to assess the prerequisites, questions, procedures and results of the various methods and their role in linguistic research in general.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
Die Studierenden entwickeln ein eigenes empirisches Projekt und wenden eine der vermittelten qualitativen Methoden exemplarisch an. Zusammen mit kurzen Aufsätzen zu jeder der erlernten Methoden wird im Laufe des Kurses ein Portfolio von insgesamt 8-10 Seiten erstellt. Das Portfolio bereitet die Studierenden auf die Modulabschlussprüfung vor, die in Form einer 30-minütigen mündlichen Prüfung oder einer schriftlichen Arbeit von 6-8 Seiten erfolgt. Die Studierenden wenden eine der erlernten Methoden auf ein Datenbeispiel an.
Students develop their own empirical projects and apply one of the qualitative methods taught in an exemplary manner. Together with short essays on each of the methods learnt, a portfolio of 8-10 pages in total is created during the course. The portfolio prepares students for the final module examination, which takes the form of a 30-minute oral examination or a written paper of 6-8 pages. Students apply one of the methods they have learnt to a data example.
