Zahlen können, besonders in den Sozialwissenschaften, eine seltsame Wirkung auf den Rezipienten entfalten. Sachverhalte, die mit Zahlen untermauert werden können, wirken seriöser und glaubwürdiger. Doch nicht jede präsentierte Zahl spiegelt auch eine Tatsache wider.
Im Rahmen des Seminars werden anhand von ausgesuchten Beispielen aus Wissen-schaft und Presse Irrtümer und bewusste Täuschungen analysiert, die bei der Anwendung von quantitativen Methoden der Sozialforschung passieren. Anhand dieser Beispiele werden die uni- und bivariaten Methoden eingeführt und eingeübt.
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist, neben der Einführung in grundlegende quantitative (Auswertungs-)Methoden, die Hinführung zu einem mündigen Umgang mit Ergebnissen empirischer Forschung.

• Mittelwerte (arithmetisches Mittel, Median, Modus)
• Streuung und Varianz
• Kontingenzanalyse
• Korrelation und Kausalität
• Graphische Darstellung
• Formulierungen in Fragebögen
