African American Music as cultural production and expression has shaped cultural discourses from youth cultures to mainstream cultures not only within the United States of America but also on a global scale. This course will look at African American music as politically and culturally powerful ' voice' and trace its role for the development of African American literature, theater, film, performance arts, and identity politics within and beyond the United States in the twentieth and twenty-first century.
