This course considers the various functions as well as the relevance of women’s speech by looking at the sites on which it was uttered and investigating the modes of speech employed by women. Taking a long-term view from the early modern period to the 20th century, investigation will revolve around the conditions having an impact on women’s speech, both restricting and enabling what women could say, how they could say it, and where.
