The history of Egypt under the British spanned from 1882-1952, when it ended with the Egyptian Revolution for which the names Naguib and Nasser became representative. The British occupation officially lasted from 1882-1922, with Egypt being declared British protectorate in 1914, and nominally ended with the declaration of Egypt's independence in 1922. But British influence lasted into the 1950s and continued to dominate political life in Egypt, promoting however also reforms. This course will concentrate on this interval from the late 19th to the mid 20th century, casting glimpses on modern Egypt. It will deal with historical aspects and look at how Egypt fascinated the British and how it found its way into British culture and literature.
