Die Rede über Weltliteratur verbindet seit Goethes Ideen zu einer solchen Schriftsteller, Literaturkritiker und Literaturwissenschaftler. Aber genauer betrachtet, bewegen sie sich auf einem schwer zu vermessenden kulturellen Feld. Die Mehrzahl weltliterarischer Kanones haben die Gestalt nationaler Bildungsprogramme oder kommunizieren das Selbstverständnis nationaler kultureller Eliten über Literatur. Die Reichweise dieser Kanones ist durch zwei Dimensionen bestimmt: eine historische, die Literatur vergangener Epochen umfassende, und eine räumliche, bestimmte Länder und Sprachen ein- und ausschließende. Im Workshop werden wir uns auf die normativen Selektionsprozesse und die Frage nach der langen oder kurzen Dauer weltliterarischer Kanonisierungen konzentrieren und die Akteursgruppen zu bestimmen suchen, die man als soziale und kulturelle Träger von Weltliteratur bezeichnen kann. Dabei gilt es mit Norbert Mecklenburg zwischen dem „Inbegriff sprachlicher Kunstwerke von Weltgeltung“ und „realen Prozessen literarischer Internationalisierung“ zu unterscheiden.
