Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts figurierte der seit dem Mittelalter unvollendet gebliebene Kölner Dom als bedeutende Projektionsfläche für politische, religiöse und künstlerische Utopien. Als man nach 1842 an die Vollendung des Bauwerkes ging, schien sich einiges davon zu verwirklichen, anderes aber auch zu zerschlagen, zumal der Weiterbau in eine Zeit intensiver gesellschaftlicher und nicht zuletzt konfessioneller Spannungen fällt. Das als Ergänzung zur Vorlesung „Die Zeit des Bauens“ konzipierte Seminar behandelt nicht nur die konzeptionelle Aufladung des Gebäudes in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit und ihren Umbrüchen über das 19. Jahrhundert hinweg, sondern lenkt den Blick auch auf die ganz eigenem Dynamiken, die sich aus der praktischen Realisierung im Bauvollzug ergaben.
