Alexander III. von Makedonien wurde schon zu Lebzeiten als außergewöhnliche Gestalt angesehen und als "der Große" tituliert; mit ihm ist ein Bruch in der griechischen Geschichte zu vermerken und der Beginn einer neuen Epoche, des Hellenismus. Die Bewertung und Erklärung seiner Handlungen wurde jedoch schon in der Antike kontrovers diskutiert - und auch in der Moderne reiben sich die Historiker an dieser Person und seinen Taten. Im Seminar soll es darum gehen, Alexander, den Alexanderzug und den Aufbau seines Reiches in unterschiedlichsten historiographischen Bewertungen kennenzulernen und zu diskutieren, wie es zu diesen so unterschiedlichen Bewertungen von der "unity of mankind" bis zu einem alkoholisierten Berserker und schließlich einem gelebten Mythos kommen kann. Der Fall Alexander soll damit Ausgangpunkt sein, die Frage zu diskutieren, wie Historiker ihre Urteile bilden und begründen.
