The aim of this course will be to analyse Shakespeare's mature tragedies both in the context of their Elizabethan/Jacobean emergence and their 20th critical and filmic reception.

William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth

Recommended pre-term reading:

The Oxford Shakesperare edition of the above mentioned tragedies including Introduction and Commentary

Three credit points will be awarded for attendance (1), an oral presentation (1) and a written essay on the topic of the presentation.
