Do you know who, where or what Nunavut is? If you are drawing a blank now: it is the largest and northernmost territory of Canada, covering a fifth of the country's entire landmass. As part of the Arctic Region and home to indigenous peoples like the Inuit, the area has been plagued by romanticized imaginations and blatant ignorance since the early days of Canadian colonization. The Far North with its glaciers and polar bears, its palpable wilderness, provides ample space for mythmaking, more often than not to the detriment of its aboriginal inhabitants.
In this class we will seek to explore the North in its own right - by looking at fictional imaginations and representations from a postcolonial perspective.
