300029 Social Policy in the Global South (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Short comment

Im alten MA Politische Kommunikation als "Global Governance" anrechenbar

Contents, comment

Over the course of the last decades, social policy has been transformed in many countries of the Global South. This transformation has been noticed by the growing literature on social policy in the Global South. Some scholars have even gone so far as to speak of a ‘quiet revolution’ (Barrientos and Hulme 2009).
The seminar plans to review some of the emerging literature on social policy in the developing world. One of the key questions in this literature is whether to stretch existing concepts developed for western welfare states or develop new ones when studying non-western social policy. This will be a key issue throughout the seminar.
The main themes of the seminar will be: origins and development of social policy in the developing world, welfare regimes in the OECD and beyond, social rights and social citizenship throughout the world and case studies of social policy development in selected countries and regions.
