Der erste, theoretisch orientierte Teil des Moduls, das im Sommersemester mit dem Thema "Kleine lyrische Formen im Mittelalter: Sprichwort, Gnome, Priamel" fortgesetzt wird, beschäftigt sich mit dem antiken (Martial, Catull), mittelalterlichen, neulateinischen und barocken Epigramm und den Theorien von Scaliger bis Lessing und Herder. Kürze und Pointiertheit sind die wichtigsten Merkmale der kleinen lyrischen Form Epigramm, wenn man den Theorien folgt; die Praxis hinkt diesem arguten Ideal, insbesondere im Mittelalter und weitgehend noch in der Barockzeit aber nach, und sie bietet zahlreiche Bespiele für weltweise Didaktik und unkritische Panegyrik. Insbesondere die Theorien seit der Aufklärung blenden die Breite und Differenziertheit der epigrammatsichen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten älterer Zeit weitgehend aus. Die Theorien müssen daher selbst zum Gegenstand kritischer Reflexion im Seminar gemacht werden.
