4chan.org represents itself as an antagonistic platform. A home for so-called “beta-fags”, “incels” and “otakus”. Its communication-culture consists of memes, irony and trolling. Phenomena such as the alt-right movement or the hacker group Anonymous or the conspiracy theory QAnon started on 4chan. Due to the per-post anonymity of the users and the high ephemeral nature of the posts, almost everything is posted without regard of any rules.
The seminar aims to examine the culture, communication and 4chan as a cluster of media practices. In particular, it will focus on the use of memes, memetic language styles and practices such as trolling.
