230292 Teaching Graphic Novels (S) (WiSe 2023/2024)

Contents, comment

Graphic novels can be integrated into English lessons in many different ways. They are authentic cultural products, springboards for receptive and productive tasks as well as active language use, and can also be embedded in more complex task formats. There is a wide range of texts available for both young and advanced learners of English. The specifics of the genre pose a didactic challenge, but if teachers become aware of them and support learners appropriately in their work with the Graphic Novels, it will pay off. Besides the functional-communicative competences, the learners' text and media competences can also be sustainably promoted. In this seminar, students will get to know how Graphic Novels tell stories and how they can use them for teaching English in the competence oriented EFLC. We will examine the teaching potential of a variety of primary texts and students will develop their own teaching units based on a graphic novel.
