Since the publication of Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto in 1764, the Gothic genre has continued to capture both academic and popular interest. In this class, we will engage with seminal texts of the genre's first wave, reading them for their depictions of ruinous castles, ancentral secrets and supernatural hauntings. Throughout this course, we will consider how these narratives reflect the anxieties and aspirations of their time and discuss the use of the fantastic as tool for social commentary. The reading list will include, but not be limited to texts by Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, and Jane Austen.
Students should be aware that the reading list for this class will be quite extensive. Some prior interest and knowledge in Gothic fiction is recommended.

In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
