The Book Club wants to bring together students with a passion for literature and literary studies who want to expand their reading and who enjoy talking to others about their reading experiences. The Book Club is organized by students for students to provide an informal setting to read and discuss books for pleasure, to practice literary criticism, and to learn more about literary movements.
This semester we will read a number of classics from British and American modernist literature (e.g. authors like Virginia Woolf, Ford Maddox Ford, D.H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway, or F. Scott Fitzgerald). The aim is to explore the books in their historical and cultural context. The specific titles will be chosen together from a pre-selected list in the first session.

We will do a significant amount of reading, the aim is to read and discuss one novel (of ~200 pages) every other week. Students must acquire the books that are to be read and bring them to the sessions, together with questions or topics they want to discuss. Apart from attendance and active participation, a Studienleistung to gain the 3 CP can consist in moderating a session or writing a short paper on one of the novels.
