In dem Anfang der 1980er Jahre erschienenen Aufsatz „Subjekt und Macht“ hat Michel Foucault die Frage danach, wie Menschen in Machtbeziehungen subjektiviert werden als das untergründige Motiv seiner Forschungsarbeiten seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre umrissen. Bei Foucaults Versuch, die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Subjekt und Macht zu erkunden, handelt es sich, wie sich heute – beinahe 30 Jahre nach Foucaults Tod – immer noch zweifelsohne sagen lässt, um eine der einflussreichsten und spannendsten Denkbewegungen in der Sozialtheorie der Gegenwart. Das Seminar dient der Lektüre zentraler Texte Foucaults zur Beziehung von Macht und Subjekt. Neben den unmittelbar thematisch einschlägigen Arbeiten wird es dabei auch um eine Auseinandersetzung mit methodischen Überlegungen Foucaults gehen.

Bei beiden Bänden handelt es sich um Textsammlungen, die jeweils zentrale Texte Foucaults, die neben seinen großen Studien entstanden sind, aus den Dickichten der Dits et Ecrits und der Vorlesungen am Collège de France zusammenstellen.
