300467 Emotions and Contemporary Social Movements (S) (SoSe 2023)

Contents, comment

This seminar has the objective to analyze the role and construction of emotions in contemporary social movements.
For this purpose, we structure the seminar in two overarching blocs (theoretical and empirical) and four steps. During the theoretical part of this seminar, and as a first step, we will discuss the (pre)notions of emotions in social movements from an interdisciplinary and global perspective. In a second step, we will introduce and discuss the contributions of leading authors in the field (e.g., Ahmed; Flam; Jasper; Goodwin). During this bloc, students will be provided with the necessary conceptual and theoretical tools to study emotions in social movements and protest.
During the second bloc of this seminar, students will put their previously acquired knowledge into practice by examining particular case studies of social movements. For this purpose, the teachers will provide certain exemplary case studies, but students are also welcome to suggest cases of their personal interest. In order to analyze the role and construction of emotions in social movements and protest, we will draw on the analysis of concrete material (e.g., manifests; (digital) archives; poems; fanzines; speeches; flyers; etc.). In a fourth and final step, students will present their first results and discuss them during class.
Both teachers use the pronouns she/her. Feel free to let us know how you would like to be addressed.
