Zu den Grundkursen MA/FNZ findet in den Wochen vor Semesterbeginn und in der ersten Semesterwoche ein verbindliches Platzverteilungsverfahren statt. Sie werden gebeten, bis Donnerstag, 17.10.2013, 18:00 Uhr, Ihre Prioritäten bei der Wahl eines der Grundkursangebote in einer online-Datenbank einzutragen. Alle Grundkurse beginnen wegen des Verteilungsverfahrens erst in der zweiten Woche.

Städte sind ein bevorzugtes Feld historischer Forschung, da hier in einem verdichteten Raum Formen der Vergesellschaftung, Kulturproduktion, Verrechtlichung und Auseinandersetzung mit der gegebenen Umwelt betrachtet werden können. Ansatz dieses Seminars ist es dabei Dynamiken der Stadtentwicklung in Europa mit denen in den Amerikas, vor allem Lateinamerika, zu kontrastieren bzw. in Verbindung zu setzen. Dabei werden Themen wie die historische Entwicklung von Stadtstrukturen, sozialstrukturelle Zusammensetzung der Stadtbevölkerung und gesellschaftliche Konflikte, urbane Kulturen, religiöse Ausdrucksformen und der Umgang mit Naturkatastrophen erörtert.
Der zeitliche Bogen spannt sich von den präkolumbischen Städten über die Städte des Mittelalters bis in die Gegenwart.
Die Bereitschaft, mit englischsprachigen Texten zu arbeiten, wird vorausgesetzt.
