Female intellectual elaboration still struggles to establish itself as a standard in the history of political thought. The intellectuals of reference in the Western tradition are still almost entirely men. This seminar aims instead to give space to women’s political thought in a long-term perspective, from the 18th century to the present. The writings of some intellectuals of the modernity (from Olympe De Gouges to Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxembourg, from Emma Goldman to Hannah Arendt to most contemporary feminists) will be examined and historically contextualized, interwoven with their biographies. Underlined will be both the main currents of political thought within which these women move, as well as the gender specificities of their analysis, and – in some cases – the more explicitly feminist perspective.
The texts will be entirely in English, and the discussion in class will likewise be conducted in English.
The course is held every two weeks.
Perfect language skills are not required to participate, but interest, commitment and willingness to participate in the exchanges.
