In der Geschichtswissenschaft kommt es - wie in anderen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen auch - bisweilen zu größeren Differenzen, die in öffentlichen Auseinandersetzungen ausgetragen werden. Diese Streitigkeiten werden dann einerseits wissenschaftsintern, aber auch in öffentlichen Medien (vor allem in Zeitungen) ausgetragen. In diesen Grundsatzstreitigkeiten vermischen sich häufig fundamentale methodische, politische und normative Fragen der Geschichtswissenschaft. Dies führen dazu, dass die in diesen Streitigkeiten aufgeworfenen Fragen, geäußerte Argumente und eingenommenen Positionen eine interessante Reflexionsmöglichkeit für Grundsatzfragen der Geschichtswissenschaft bieten. Diesen soll in der Veranstaltung anhand von mehreren vergangenen Auseinandersetzungen in der deutschen Geschichtswissenschaft nachgegangen werden.
