230264 Edenic Nightmares: Suburbia as Cultural Space (S) (SoSe 2023)

Contents, comment

Located at the intersection of city and country, the significance of the suburb extends well beyond its spatial dimension: Since the 19th century, it has become intricately connected to complex sociocultural issues of socioeconomic status, ethnic identity, and gender dynamics. Variously configured as refuge from corrupted cityscapes, a place of bourgeouis narrow-mindedness, of hypocrisy, imprisonment and oppression, the suburb resists straighforward interpretations. In this seminar we will investigate the history of the suburb in British and US-American contexts, its diverse representations on page and screen, and its far-reaching influences on popular culture. Theories of psychoanalysis, postcolonialism, and gender studies will help us make sense of suburbia as an actual sociocultural space and as a discursive construct. Our list of primary material will include texts by Robert Yates, T.C. Boyle, Bernadine Evaristo, Joyce Carol Oats, and Stephen King, TV series such as Desperate Housewives, and others.
