Die "Ilias Latina" stellt eine lateinische Bearbeitung der Homerischen "Ilias" aus neronischer Zeit dar, die durch ein Akrostichon der ersten acht Verse einem "Italicus" als Verfasser zugeordnet wird. Sie kondensiert das umfangreiche griechische Epos auf 1070 lateinische Hexameter und gibt dabei viel an literarischem Wert auf, folgt oftmals nur dem äußeren Handlungsgeschehen. Gerade dies soll uns aber herausfordern, das sprachlich relativ einfache Werk der lateinischen Dichtung in einer "ad hoc-Lektüre" zu bewältigen. Vergleichend werden wir dabei gelegentlich das Homerische Original zurate ziehen und uns schwerpunktmäßig mit den Partien befassen, die den Homerischen Büchern 1-3 (Chryseis und Briseis, Groll des Achill, Zweikampf Menelaos-Paris) und 16-24 (Tod des Patroklos und des Hektor) entsprechen.
