Unpathetisches, unsentimentales, "kaltes", "klinisches" oder zumindest affektiv befremdliches Erzählen gilt als ein charakteristisches Merkmal moderner Literatur. Einer der Urheber dieser Erzählkultur ist Gustave Flaubert, auf dessen Poetik der Unempfindsamkeit (impassibilité) sich viele Erzähler des 20. Jahrhunderts berufen haben. Ausgangspunkt der Vorlesung ist Flauberts L'Éducation sentimentale (1869), eine Standardreferenz der Literaturtheorie seit Lukács' ''Theorie des Romans.''Auf dem Programm stehen ferner Auszüge aus Flauberts umfangreichem Briefwechsel. In einem zweiten Teil werden, anhand ausgewählter Beispiele, die Auswirkungen der Flaubertschen Poetik auf den französischen, aber auch den internationalen Roman des 20. Jahrhunderts skizziert.
