300839 Gender Sociology: Introduction to selected classical feminist readings (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

Everyday conversation, media representations, or the division of labour in the family, and many more examples in our lives are gendered. Gender, and in particular heteronormativity, determines one's position in society, like (and in cooperation with) many other social categories such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation etc., in the stratified structure of society.
This course deals with the social construction of gender and sexuality and aims to provide an overview of feminist gender sociology based on selected classical readings (such as from Patricia Hill Collins, Adrienne Rich, Judith Butler, Barbara Risman, etc.) and investigate the relationship between society and gender by looking at macro and micro processes in society. In addition, the fact that the course is in English will provide a benefit for reading the original sources in the field.
The following questions will guide us throughout the course.
• How are gender and sexuality socially constructed?
• How do sexuality and gender work in the macrostructures such as in the context of labour, politics, or culture? How do, for example, work gender inequalities in
society? And what is the relationship between culture and gender?
• How do we learn and reproduce gender and sexuality in our daily lives? What does it mean, for example, to be gendered in social institutions such as family and
work? And what is the gendered form of social interactions?
At the end of the course, it is aimed that the participants can think gender-critically and analyze social processes from a gender sociological perspective.
