An jenen Iden des März fand Caesar den Tod, die letale Krise der Römischen Republik aber fand ihre Fortsetzung in einem neuen Bürgerkrieg. Den inneren Frieden stellte sein 'Adoptivsohn' gewaltsam her: Imperator Caesar Augustus (27 v. - 14 n. Chr.). Seine dabei errungene Machtposition, die alle Normen sprengte, formte er geschickt zur verfassungsmäßigen und charismatischen Herrschaft. Die Neuordnung des Staates gab er als "restitutio rei publicae" aus, als eine Wiederherstellung. Doch es bestand kein Zweifel, daß Augustus eine Monarchie errichtet hatte, kaschiert als Principat.
