Focused on the structure, dynamics, and interpretation of performance and protest, this seminar explores whether and how power is embodied, staged, and reclaimed narratively. We will discuss resistance movements that borrow theatre’s tools and techniques, political plays and dramaturgy, questions of representation and agency, spectacle, event and terror, theories of power, and other relevant issues in performance studies.
For those of you who would like a head start on the reading material, our discussion involves Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, George Wolfe’s “The Colored Museum”, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, and NourbeSe Philip’s Zong!.
