Hermann Hesse war einer der erfolgreichsten deutschsprachigen Schriftsteller*innen des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1946 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Aller Erfolge und Ehrungen zum Trotz wurde und wird das Werk aber immer wieder kritisch beleuchtet: kitschig seien seine Texte, pathetisch, epigonal, banal, völlig mißlungen seine Gedichte ... Dabei fand (und findet?) seine Prosa gerade unter Jugendlichen verschiedener Generationen weltweit eine glühend beigeisterte Leserschaft.
Wir wollen versuchen, exemplarisch diesem Schwanken zwischen Ablehnung und Begeisterung auf die Spur zu kommen. Im Seminarfokus stehen hierfür die (wie im Grunde alle Hesse-Texte) stark autobiografisch gefärbten Romane "Deminan" (1919) und "Steppenwolf" (1927). Besonders interessieren wird uns hier die Frage, inwieweit sich Hesses Auseinandersetzung mit der analytischen Psychologie von C. G. Jung in den Texten niederschlägt.
Beide Romane gelten als "Roman(e) der Lebenskrise", es scheint also eine Triggerwarnung angebracht (Drogen, Depression, Suizid).
