Theodor W. Adorno neigte zu provokativen, manchmal paradox erscheinenden Formulierungen. Eine vielzitierte lautet: Es gibt kein richtiges Leben im falschen. Das bedeutet nun keinesfalls, dass sich das uralte philosophische Fragen nach dem richtigen Leben erübrigt. Im Gegenteil hat Adorno seit den "Minima Moralia" (1951) in seinen "Reflexionen aus dem beschädigten Leben" auf dem Grund solchen Fragens eine Erneuerung der Philosophie aus der individuellen Erfahrung heraus versucht. Literatur als Medium des Selbst- und Fremdverstehens spielt dabei eine vorrangige Rolle. Die Vorlesung stellt diesen Zusammenhang über die "Noten zur Literatur" (1958ff.) bis hin zur "Ästhetischen Theorie" (1970) dar.
