Der Vergleich zwischen den großen Imperien der Moderne ist nicht nur ein wichtiges Thema in der Geschichtswissenschaft und Nachbardisziplinen, sondern hat bereits die Zeitgenossen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts selber beschäftigt. Nicht zuletzt diese aus Mächterivalität heraus unternommenen Vergleiche bildeten ein wesentliches Moment für imperiale Bestrebungen, gerade auch bei kleineren und nachholenden Kolonialmächten vom späten 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Epoche der Weltkriege des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts (Belgien, Italien, Deutschland, USA, Japan). Die Veranstaltung dient vor allem der gemeinsamen Diskussion neuerer Ansätze der vergleichenden Imperiumsforschung.
