In diesem Sommer findet die 15. Ausgabe der documenta in Kassel statt. Als Großausstellung, die vor allem der zeitgenössischen Kunst gewidmet ist, feiert die documenta seit ihrer ersten Ausgabe 1955 bis heute große Erfolge. Dabei unterscheiden sich die zuerst alle vier, dann alle fünf Jahre stattfindenden Ausstellungen sehr voneinander, was die gezeigten Werke, den dahinter stehenden Kunstbegriff und die kuratorische Konzeption der jeweiligen Ausgabe angeht.
Im Seminar wird am Beispiel verschiedener Ausgaben der Ausstellungsgeschichte der documenta nachgegangen. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage, in welchem Verhältnis die Großausstellung jeweils zu den aktuellen Tendenzen der Kunst und der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung stand und steht. Damit verbunden ist auch die methodische Frage, wie bzw. nach welchen analytischen Gesichtspunkten sich Ausstellungen als ephemere Ereignisse untersuchen lassen.

Vom 21. bis zum 23. Juli findet eine gemeinsame dreitägige Exkursion (zwei Übernachtungen) zur 15. documenta nach Kassel statt. Die Teilnahme an der Exkursion ist verpflichtender Bestandteil des Seminars.
