This seminar will discuss international development in the context of climate change. The first thematic block explores theoretical approaches to development and how the environment, and issues around sustainability, have been considered (or ignored) in relation to development over the last decades. We will address the question how climate change, as a relatively new concept, might give new momentum to earlier thinking on the nexus between development and the environment in general. The second block is concerned with various aspects through which different consequences of climate change might affect development. The effects of climate change on development issues such as disaster risk reduction, agricultural productivity and water rights will be discussed, and we will explore questions related to the effects of biofuels on development and human rights, as well as the potential role of migration as a means to adapt to climate stressors. The last block addresses different actors involved in the relationship between climate change and development. We will look into ways of understanding adaptation at the household level, the role of civil society and international institutions, and the shaping of future global policies. In one block session of four hours we will discuss concerns related to globalisation and climate change justice.
