300021 Mobilities: Mobile Work and Mobile Lives in Contemporary Capitalism (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Contents, comment

In contemporary capitalism, job mobility seems to be an imperative for all levels of job qualification, from non-skilled workers to highly skilled professionals. However the types of mobility (commuting, business trips, multiple homes, transnational migration, Expatriate delegation), the spatial dimensions of mobility (north-south, south-north, south-south) and thus the implications that this mobilities have for the everyday life of social actors is highly differentiated by class, gender, and ethnicity. Boltanski and Chiapello, for example, suggest that mobility today constitutes a central feature for social stratification. John Urry even has suggested a new paradigm for the social sciences built upon mobility. Thus, readings of and discussions on John Urry’s books „mobilities“ and „Mobile Lives“ (together with Anthony Elliott) will be at the centre of the seminar.

Requirements for participation, required level

Participants must have basic knowledge in the area of the sociology of work (e.g. having completed an introductory course in 'sociology of work' or having read an introductory book).
