Christopher Kolumbus (1451-1506) entdeckte 1492 Amerika, als er eine Insel der Bahamas erreichte und auf derselben Reise das heutige Haiti und die Domenikanische Republik.
Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512) war Leiter einer Handelsniederlassung der Medici in Sevilla. Er nahm an vier Entdeckungsreisen nach Mittel- und Südamerika teil. Er erkannte als erster, daß das heutige Brasilien Teil eines neuen Kontinents ist, einer neuen Welt (mundus novus). Deshalb heißt Amerika auch Amerika...
Ogier Ghislain de Busbecq (1522-1592) war Humanist, Botaniker und Diplomat, was ihn ins Osmanische Reich führte, um dort einen Waffenstillstand auszuhandeln.Alle drei schrieben Briefe über ihre Reisen: Kolumbus auf Spanisch, Vespucci auf Italienisch, die bald ins Lateinische übersetzt wurden; Busbeq schrieb auf Latein.
Im Seminar wollen wir diese drei Reiseberichte unter die Lupe nehmen und schauen, aus welcher Perspektive, mit welcher Haltung und mit welchen Vorurteilen die drei Reisenden die ihnen unbekannten Regionen und deren Einwohner*innen beschreiben.
