Als „Zukunftsphilologie“ verhöhnte der berühmte Altphilologe Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Möllendorff die Abhandlung "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik" (1872) seines jungen Kollegen Friedrich Nietzsche. Diese Kritik nimmt das Seminar zum Ausgangspunkt, um zu fragen, welche Zukunftsperspektiven das Werk Nietzsches der Philologie heute bietet.
Die Teilnehmer*innen werden in ausgewählte Texte Nietzsches eingeführt, wobei die Veranstaltung nicht den Anspruch erhebt, einen umfassenden Überblick über das philosophische Gesamtwerk zu geben, sondern den Fokus auf die Schriften richtet, die für literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen von besonderer Relevanz sind. Dazu gehören Texte zur Ästhetik und Kunstphilosophie ("Geburt der Tragödie", "Der Fall Wagner"), zur Sprachphilosophie ("Über Wahrheit und Lüge im außermoralischen Sinne"), zum Geschichtsdenken ("Vom Nachteil und Nutzen der Historie für das Leben") und zur Wissenschaftsphilosophie ("Die Fröhliche Wissenschaft").
Zum Abschluss des Seminars wird die Rezeption Nietzsches in der Literaturwissenschaft anhand einzelner Forschungspositionen rekonstruiert.
