Finaler Gegenstand des Kurses sind die mathematisch definierten "Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAGs)", die hier beispielhaft als sogenannter "mild kontextsensitiver Grammatikformalismus" fungieren. Als ein solcher Formalismus dienen TAGs in der linguistischen Beschreibung natürlicher Sprache dazu, insbesondere auf (Teil-)Satzebene auch solchen sprachlichen Phänomenen gerecht zu werden, die mit einfachen kontextfreien Phrasenstrukturgrammatiken nicht unmittelbar adäquat beschreibbar scheinen.

Die Veranstaltung beginnt im ersten Teil mit der Bereitstellung und gemeinsamen Erarbeitung der notwendigen mathematischen Grundlagen. Danach werden Baumadjunktionsgrammatiken selbst im Blickpunkt stehen.
