In this introductory seminar, we will trace some of the contours of the research field trans studies in its beginnings and at present, subsequently also considering possible developments for the field in the future. While doing so, we will familiarise ourselves with influential literature that is considered constitutional to trans studies, but also explore more recent, relevant scholarly discourse. Some of the issues we will discuss in this seminar are: methodological and epistemological questions, transnormativity, medicalization processes and their impact on trans individuals, and trans hostile narratives that are employed and reproduced by many different social actors. By conducting an intersectional analysis of the category trans, we will develop an understanding of what characterizes the lived realities of trans individuals. By doing this, we will be pursuing the question: What does it actually mean to be trans?
The course requires students to have a basic understanding of gender theory in order to participate.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
