Course Description
The course aims at examining the reasons responsible for movements, mobilities, and migrations with a focus on Africans to Germany. The factors that serve as disincentives to move will be discussed as 'push' factors, while those that are attractive from Germany will be seen as 'pull' factors. The various means especially young Africans attempt to use to travel abroad will also be looked at.
The course seeks to broaden students’ understanding of migration processes and aims at empowering students to critically reflect on these and be able to identify how same, similar, or different factors are applicable to other contexts.
Phenomena such as deskilling which is generally associated with movements and migrations will also be discussed. In addition, some challenges African immigrants encounter after arriving at the destination area will be highlighted. The course will focus more on West African migrations to Germany and especially from 1990.
