Es wird inhaltlich nach einem Blick auf Vergil, Calpurnius und Nemesianus als antiken Vorbildern um vorrangig karolingische Vertreter der lateinischen Hirtendichtung des Mittelalters gehen, danach um die breit überlieferte "Ecloga Theoduli" (10. Jh.). Den Schluss bildet Dante und ein Ausblick auf Petrarca und Boccaccio.
