Ziel des Kurses ist die Vermittlung grundlegender Kenntnisse bei der Verwendung von Computern im Studium. Dazu gehören die folgenden Inhalte:
* Der Computer: Daten, Dateien, Dateisysteme, WWW
* Textverarbeitung
* Tabellenkalkulation
* Zeichenrepertoires
* Arbeiten mit einem Editor
* Reguläre Ausdrücke
* Präsentationen
* XHTML: Erstellen von WebpagesIm Verlauf des Kurses werden neue Inhalte erläutert, Techniken werden vorgeführt und eingeübt. Die Teilnehmenden sind zum Fragen aufgefordert, Raum für betreute Übungen ist gegeben. Als Software wird OpenOffice.org eingesetzt, das kostenlos für eine Reihe von Betriebssystemen verfügbar ist (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris). Die Teilnehmer sind angehalten zu Übungszwecken auf einem ihnen zugänglichen Rechner für eine entsprechende Umgebung zu sorgen.
